"BOW RIVER IMPRESSIONISM"

It was a gorgeous autumn day in the village of Banff. If you have ever been there you know that the beautiful Bow River borders the village and there is a lovely promenade one can walk along and gaze at the exquisite glacial waters as they drift silently by.

I was taking just such a walk along the promenade when I noticed a huge bull elk standing on the bank across the river. He was an elegant beast with an enormous set of antlers. I did not have a enough lens with me to get his image but I really didn't care. I was sure that the old gentleman had been photographed a million times and once more wouldn't add anything to the global collection. For me, it isn't always about grabbing a photo. Sometimes it's just about living the moment. And on this autumn day, with the sun radiating it's warmth and light, the moment was everything.

As I stood on my side of the river, mesmerized by the view, my gaze gradually came down to the water in front of me. I'm certain I stood there for quite sometime before I suddenly saw something that truly captured my imagination. There before me were clouds dancing and treetops rippling on the emerald and sapphire waters. It was like a painting come alive.

It often happens that what the eye sees does not translate well in the camera and vice versa, especially when it comes to light and color. This was one of those special times when what I saw and what the camera saw were as one.

My favorite painters are of the impressionistic ilk. Of their kind Monet has always been my favorite. The moment I saw this image for the first time the name just popped into my head "Bow River Impressionism". On this day the river was a painter and her genre was impressionism.
